Ballina Shire road and Council services update at 11am

Ballina Shire road and Council services update at 11am

There are still several roads across Ballina Shire with water over road, and road closures. Due to access and safety restrictions Ballina Shire Council staff cannot inspect and signpost all roads.

Information on roads which have been inspected is available online at

Although the rain has eased, we are likely to see further tidal inundation of roads and land over the coming days as flood water travels down from the Richmond River. Drive to conditions, and if it’s flooded forget it!

The Pacific Highway is open in both directions. Ross Lane and the Cumbalum Interchange remain closed.

Residents are urged to continue avoiding non-essential travel as high winds and wet soil can cause landslips and falling trees.

The Burns Point Ferry remains CLOSED. Council is waiting for river conditions to improve before completing essential repair works. We anticipate the ferry will be back online mid to late next week.

The recent weather has caused numerous potholes on local roads. Motorists are urged to drive carefully with these conditions in mind, and where possible avoid road hazards. Council crews will continue working to repair potholes and road surfaces over the coming weeks. You can report major potholes online via Council’s Community Portal at

The Evacuation Centre at the Lennox Head Cultural Centre will close from today.

Flood/storm waste

Residents with waste generated from flash flooding or storm damage during this week’s event can dispose of the waste for FREE at the Ballina Waste Management Centre on Southern Cross Drive (including green waste).

The waste centre is open today.

Please do not place waste from this current storm event on the kerbside. Residents who are unable to transport waste can contact the Waste Management Centre on 02 6686 1287 to discuss alternative arrangements.

Bin collection

Council’s Resource Recovery Team were unable to complete collections on Wednesday 30 March due to flooding. These missed collections have been rescheduled for Saturday 2 April 2022.

The team were also unable to collect bins at Houghlahans Road, Stokers Lane, Crosbys Lane and a section of Friday Hut Road on Thursday 31 March. These collections will occur once roads are open and it is safe to do so.

Where safe to do so, residents should leave their bins out for recollection.

Missing bins

If you are in need of a bin replacement, please log a request via the Community Portal on or call 1300 864 444.

The Recovery Centre and Distribution Hub remain closed due to the severe weather. The Recovery Centre (Ballina Surf Club) will reopen 9am Saturday morning. Flood-impacted residents can still access support by calling the Service NSW hotline on 13 77 88.

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport

Due to recent rain events the airport is closed Thursday 31 March and Friday 1 April, with limited services Saturday 2 April and Sunday 3 April 2022.

The runway needs a few days to dry out before commercial flights can return to service.

Please contact your airline directly to discuss your individual flight arrangements. Visit for updates.
