Barangaroo's popular free harbour swimming spot, Marrinawi Cove, will receive an expanded public open space area and new changing facilities with a first look at the upgrades unveiled today.
Due to the area's popularity with locals and tourists, the Minns Labor Government is delivering additional grassed area, landscaping and dedicated changing facilities to complement the existing amenities and meet demand.
The upgrades will include:
- Relocating a section of the existing eastern fence line and converting operational space at Port Authority of NSW's adjacent Moore's Wharf site into approximately 380 square metres of additional public open space - roughly the size of a four bedroom home and backyard.
- Creating new lawn areas for lounging and picnicking, complemented by additional planting, seating and shade
- New changing facilities
- A new entry area with upgraded paving
The upgrade will begin shortly and be finished this summer. During construction, Marrinawi Cove is expected to remain open to the public where safe and practical, with only the areas immediately under construction closed.
These upgrades follow stage one works last year which saw the Government deliver:
- A larger swimming area with a realigned shark net
- A new outdoor shower
- A new platform and non-slip stairs for safer water access
- Integrated sandstone steps for improved water entry
- Additional towel space through relocated sandstone blocks
- A depth marker to support swimmer safety
The enhancements are part of a broader initiative to improve accessibility around Sydney's foreshore areas to boost usage and improve the experience. All works at Marrinawi Cove are funded through Barangaroo developer contributions.
Marrinawi Cove first opened for swimming in January 2023, creating Sydney's first new harbour swimming spot in decades and quickly became a favourite for tourists and locals offering a rare opportunity to swim in the heart of Sydney's CBD and harbour for free.
Infrastructure NSW, Port Authority of NSW and Placemaking NSW have been working collectively to ensure the best outcome for the public while maintaining access and ongoing operational requirements.
