For the first time, Townsville City Council has used a 1000-tonne barge to transport equipment to Magnetic Island ahead of an extensive works program.
Acting Mayor and Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Mark Molachino said the barge was hired from a local company.
"This is the first time Council has used such a big barge to support an extensive works program on Magnetic Island," Cr Molachino said.
"Council hired the barge from local company Pacific Marine Group, which is one way Council is supporting local business through this program.
"This approach cuts our transport costs by more than $25,000 so it is a significant saving for ratepayers. Ninety per cent of our machines and material needed for the works have been sent to the island on this barge.
"The cargo included 600 tonnes of quarry gravel, a 20-tonne excavator, a steel drum roller and a grader.
"Council will complete more than 30 projects and will have an ongoing presence on the island this financial year."
Local councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the projects will be a great boost for the island.
"It was wonderful to watch the barge come ashore at Horseshoe Bay – the supplies will allow crews to complete millions of dollars worth of projects," Cr Greaney said.
"Some of the equipment is now in use on Swensen Street. That project alone is supporting 25 jobs so there will be ongoing benefits for the Island's economy.
"We'd like to thank locals and tourists for their patience during these projects. Council will do all it can to minimise disruptions at each site."
