BaRK Kids Reading Program seeking new participants

The BaRK (Building Reading Confidence for Kids) program is a literacy program for beginning readers, where children can read to a trained Therapy Dog to improve confidence. The program encourages children to read aloud without fear of mistakes or judgement.

If you've visited Tomaree Library lately, you probably weren't expecting to see a dog sitting and reading books in the junior section...

Did you know that on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the school term, we have special visitor 'Cricket' at the Tomaree Library, patiently listening to children practicing their reading aloud?

Cricket is a specially trained Delta Therapy Dog and he attends the library each week with his human, Keith. Cricket sits patiently and listens to the kids read, and he also loves pats and scratches!

The BaRK (Building Reading Confidence for Kids) program is a literacy program for beginning readers. Studies have shown that reading to the therapy dog improves confidence and encourages children to read aloud without fear of mistakes or judgement. Tomaree Library are currently seeking children who would like to participate in the BaRK program.

The program is free of charge, and children can practice reading aloud on a one-to-one basis.
