Barnett fails to back timber industry

Tasmanian Labor

Minster for Resources Guy Barnett has failed to commit to supplying the contracted 137,000 cubic metres of sawlogs to the Tasmanian timber industry every year until at least 2027.

Shadow Minister for Resources Shane Broad said the Minister was failing to commit to his own timber supply contracts.

"In his 2017 Ministerial statement, Minister Barnett said the government would not reduce the legislated requirement for Sustainable Timbers Tasmania to make available 137,000 cubic metres of high-quality sawlog to its customers every year until 2027," Dr Broad said.

"Yet it appears he is now breaking this commitment by seeking to renegotiate timber contracts with less timber than the contracted volumes he has previously committed to.

"The forestry industry is vital to Tasmania and provides work for people right across the state.

"Minister Barnett needs to tell Tasmanians why he is seeking to renegotiate this deal and what it will mean for Tasmania's vital forestry industry.

"If he's not willing to do that, he needs to own up to his legacy as a Minister who peddles fake support and utter hypocrisy."
