The Deputy Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Gavin Turnbull AM, laid a wreath today in Hobart to commemorate the 78th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
"Air Force participation at the Battle of Britain Commemorative Service provides an opportunity for our service personnel to recognise the Australian airmen who flew with the Royal Air Force for one of the greatest air battles ever fought," Air Vice-Marshal Turnbull said.
"Between July and October 1940 this aerial struggle was fought over the skies of southern England between the RAF and the fighters and bombers of the German Luftwaffe, for the very survival of Britain itself.
"So important was this battle that it inspired Winston Churchill to utter the immortal words ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few’.
"Of the few, twenty four Australian pilots gave their lives during the Battle of Britain.
"It’s important for us to continue to recognise the critical role airmen played during the Second World War, particularly during the air battles to defend Great Britain in 1940. They fought with gallantry and distinction.
"I am proud to be here in Hobart today to remember the fallen and honour those who served," Air Vice-Marshal Turnbull said.
The commemoration included a flyover featuring RAAF Hawk 127 jets from Number 79 Squadron based at RAAF Base Pearce in Western Australia; and a Roulettes aerial display.
The Tasmanian Division of the RAAF Association organised the weekend commemorations while the Air Force Band provided ceremonial support.
