Bayside Council is set to expand the size of Mascot Memorial Park and increase the amount of open space in the area.
Council was recently able to purchase three properties adjoining the popular, much-loved Mascot Memorial Park. After a period of negotiation, Council purchased the properties at 816-822 Botany Road Mascot.
This will enable Council to expand Mascot Memorial Park by almost 1700 square metres.
One of the properties has a very large, heritage listed fig tree in the rear yard. This tree, similar to others in Mascot Memorial park will be preserved for the whole community to enjoy.
Council is now considering how best to incorporate the properties into the Park. It is likely the existing buildings will be demolished with basic landscaping, turfing and seating installed as part of the first stage of opening the additional open space to the community.
Bayside Council has long recognised the ongoing need to provide additional community facilities and open space to cater to the needs of a growing and changing population.
Council is actively upgrading and improving existing parks and open spaces while continually looking for new opportunities to acquire more park space.
Bayside Mayor Edward McDougall said
"It is not every day that Council is able to acquire such a significant parcel of land in a highly urbanised area to create additional public open space," Mayor Edward McDougall said.
"I am proud that Bayside Council identified and pursued this opportunity, and I look forward to everyone being able to enjoy the extra the open space and magnificent heritage listed fig tree that will be preserved for generations to come."
