Beforeplay Campaign Promotes STI Awareness, Testing

Department of Health

Sexually transmissible infections (STIs) such as syphilis, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia remain on the rise in Australia, with 1 in 6 Australians likely to contract an STI in their lifetime.

The 'Beforeplay' campaign aims to raise awareness about the prevention of STIs, particularly among young people aged under 35 years.

Many STIs don't have symptoms, which means you can have an STI without knowing it. This makes regular STI testing and always using protection, such as condoms, essential for preventing transmission. STIs are easy to detect through an STI test and are easy to treat when caught early - helping to avoid serious health complications.

A dedicated First Nations stream 'STIs are Gammon' has also been developed, using culturally relevant messaging to engage First Nations communities in conversations about STI prevention and testing.

The campaign is being delivered nationally across digital platforms, billboards, and community posters, with tailored materials to ensure accessibility for diverse audiences.
