Beggars arrested in Melbourne

Seven people were arrested in Melbourne's CBD earlier this week as part of Operation Aquim.

Aquim is a joint operation involving Victoria Police, City of Melbourne and the Salvation Army targeting professional beggars who take advantage of the community's generosity in the CBD.

An operation was conducted across Melbourne from 1 to 2 July, resulting in the arrests of seven Chinese Nationals, three women aged 65, 67 and 71 and two men aged 68 and 72.

They are all expected to be charged on summons with beg alms and possessing property believed to be the proceeds of crime.

If a person who is begging is acting aggressively, violently or their behaviour is placing people at risk - you can report the matter to the police by phoning Triple Zero (000).
