Better planning and stronger local government under Labor

Tasmanian Labor
  • Work with local government for stronger regional economic development and health services
  • Funding for Cradle Coast Authority planning framework
  • Labor is working for Tasmanians to deliver better planning and strong local government
  • A majority Labor Government will recognise the important role of planning in driving economic growth, addressing the housing crisis and preserving the Tasmanian way of life.

Shadow Minister for Local Government and Planning Anita Dow said Labor's planning and local government policy will address planning issues and keep local governments strong.

"A majority Labor Government will support the Local Government Association of Tasmania to address the State's shortage of planners, use planning to help address the housing crisis and work in partnership with local government across the State," Ms Dow said.

"Labor will commit to not forcing any amalgamations and work hand in hand with local government to deliver stronger regional economic development, better regional health services and better strategic planning.

"For seven years the Liberals have delayed planning reform and there is still no state-wide planning scheme, no planning policies and out of date regional land use strategies.

"A majority Labor Government will establish a State Planning Agency that will develop and advise on land use regulations and policies, plan for growth across Tasmania and help develop Tasmania's planning policies."

Ms Dow said a majority Labor Government would provide $150,000 to the Cradle Coast Authority to support the development of a fit-for-purpose planning framework for the Cradle Coast region.

"This project will build on the work done by councils to share resources, conduct a detailed analysis of services, fees and charges and work on the update of the Regional Land Use Strategy.

"And we will increase funding for each of the three NRMs to $450,000 per year to provide a significant boost for the state and look after our natural environment.

"Labor will work for better outcomes for Tasmania.

"Only Labor is working for Tasmanians to deliver better planning and stronger local government."
