The Australian Government has established the Better Regulation Working Group to streamline processes and improve efficiency in the higher education sector.
Co-chaired by the Department of Education and Universities Australia, the Working Group will identify practical, commonsense actions that can be taken while continuing to assure quality and confidence in the sector.
This work happens alongside the Government taking important steps to improve university governance.
This includes improving transparency around Vice-Chancellor pay and money spent on consultants, as well as establishing a National Code to prevent and respond to sexual violence at universities.
This Working Group will look at ways to streamline processes and remove unnecessary duplication, while ensuring that universities meet the standards that the whole community expects.
Members will come from key regulators, peak bodies, unions and student representatives and will meet monthly from March to December 2026.
This work will complement the work being done to join up our tertiary education system to make it easier for students to move between VET and higher education.
