The Mount Gambier Library held the Big Summer Read launch party at Cave Garden/Thugi on Tuesday 6 January 2026 with approximately 150 children, parents, grandparents and caregivers attending the free community event.
Families had the opportunity to enjoy activities including a performance by local child entertainer Whacky Mac, Little Animal Encounters petting zoo, free sausage sizzle, giant games, craft activities and face painting. Attendees spent time out in the sunshine while learning more about the Big Summer Read program.
"What an incredible start to our school holiday program and the launch of the Big Summer Read for Mount Gambier Library. It was great to see families come together and enjoy the activities on offer," Team Leader Children's and Youth Services Erin Jones said.
Mayor Lynette Martin and CEO Paul Simpson attended the event.
"The City of Mount Gambier is really pleased to be able to deliver events that play such an important role in improving the social lives and educational outcomes for our community. These free to attend events that allow unrestricted attendance for our youngest community members without imposing any cost to families are so important," Mayor Martin said.
Big Summer Read is a free summer reading program for children and young people aged 0-18. Participants are encouraged to read over the school holidays, complete challenges and track their reading for the chance to win state and national prizes.
