Our annual Volunteer Recognition Function on 7 December was an opportunity to thank our volunteers for the many ways we thank and celebrate our volunteers.
Special milestone awards were presented to those who have volunteered with Council for 10 years through to 35 years. Those recognised included Willy Van Ravesteijn, for 35 years of service as a Meals on Wheels volunteer, and Paul Chenery, Ian Game and Annette O'Sullivan, who have each volunteered for 25 years.
Together, special milestone award winners have clocked up around 475 years of volunteering with Council!
Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Rob Steane, said volunteers are an integral part of the community.
"Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers for their dedication and commitment to our community," Cr Steane said.
"Whether it's delivering a meal, helping isolated residents get out and about, working with young people or helping to care for our bushland reserves, Maroondah volunteers provide their service for no reward other than knowing they are helping someone."
Longstanding volunteer Willy Van Ravesteijn has assisted with Meals on Wheels for 35 years, although she says it does not feel like that long!
She took up volunteering with a friend once their children had grown up and has volunteered ever since, largely because of "the friendships" she has formed with clients over the years.
"I just enjoy meeting the people and being able to help them," Willy said.
Willy's years of service have even helped inspire her eldest daughter to take up volunteering! She encouraged community members to consider volunteering, as it is "a good thing to do" that helps those in need while also benefiting the volunteer.
"The best thing about being involved in Meals on Wheels is that you help all of the people. But you don't only help other people; it makes you feel better yourself."
