Bill to create Tasmanian Planning Policies passes Parliament

The Land Use Planning and Approvals Amendment (Tasmanian Planning Policies and Miscellaneous) Bill 2018 has now passed the Tasmanian Parliament.

The Bill enables the creation of Tasmanian Planning Policies (TPPs), which will provide the much needed strategic direction to Tasmania’s land use planning system.

TPPs will provide the overarching direction to Tasmania’s land use planning system to support our sustainable economic growth, protect the values that make Tasmania unique and plan for the future needs of our community.

The TPPs will cover a number of important issues, including, but not limited to, settlement and liveability, transport and infrastructure, natural and cultural heritage and hazards and risks and economic development.

These policies will fill a critical gap in Tasmania’s planning system, helping to shape what we want Tasmania to look like into the future.

In addition, the first set of Land Supply Orders passed through Parliament under our new fast track rezoning legislation. This will see surplus government land rezoned quickly to increase the supply of affordable housing.

The initial land to be re-zoned is in Devonport, West Moonah and Rokeby, and represents between 40 – 50 subdivision lots with the potential for multiple dwellings on these lots.
