The Finocchiaro CLP Government will today introduce amendments to the Police Administration Act 1978 to formally create the position title of the Police Public Safety officer (PPSO).
This Bill simply adds Police Public Safety officer to sections 19 and 164 of the Police Administration Act 1978, so that it will now read:
(a) a member of the Police Force; or
(b) a Special Constable; or
(c) an Aboriginal Community Police officer; or
(d) a Police Auxiliary; or
(e) a Police Public Safety officer.
Chief Minister and Police Minister Lia Finocchiaro said Acting Commissioner Martin Dole APM has advised the amendment must happen first to formally establish the PPSO, before detailed formal consultation can take place with the NT Police Association on terms, conditions, and remuneration.
"This Bill must happen before we can start formal industrial consultation with the NT Police Association, so that recruitment can begin as soon as possible," Mrs Finocchiaro said.
The Amendment Bill will be debated and passed on urgency in Parliament today to allow those formal discussions to commence without delay.
Acting Commissioner Dole APM has briefed the NT Police Association President Nathan Finn on the need for this course of action.
The process for the Police Public Safety officer stream is:
Create the position of Police Public Safety officer in the Police Administration Act;Detailed industrial relations consultation with the NT Police Association;Recruitment of people to the PPSO position; andCommence the recruit course.
