Bin Inspections Launch to Boost Recycling, Cut Costs

We're introducing a new kerbside bin inspection program to help reduce contamination in our four-bin kerbside service - and keep waste service costs down for the community.

Each week, Council staff will check a small number of bins in selected areas. The inspections are quick, respectful, and focused on education - not enforcement.

Here's how it works

  • Inspectors lift the lid for a visual check only - they don't touch or remove any items.
  • Bins are tagged with a "happy" or "sad" label, depending on whether any contamination is found.
  • Each tag includes a QR code linking to Council's A-Z Recycling Guide.

Contaminated bins cost everyone. When the wrong things go in the wrong bins, entire truckloads can be sent to landfill instead of being recycled or composted. That adds to Council's waste costs, which are ultimately paid by ratepayers.

This program aims to

  • Help households understand what goes in each bin
  • Support better recycling habits
  • Reduce contamination and avoid unnecessary landfill costs

Every correctly sorted bin helps reduce landfill, recover valuable resources, and keep waste costs in check.
