The Bland Shire Animal Shelter was officially opened on Thursday, 11 September 2025, strengthening animal welfare services across the Shire.

The project began on 24 February 2025 and was delivered with the support of $631,000 in funding from Phase 4 of the Federal Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

The new shelter is a modern, purpose-built facility featuring eight dog pens with individual runs, a puppy room, a cattery, and a vet room. These facilities will ensure the highest level of care for lost and surrendered animals.

The opening ceremony was led by Mayor of Bland Shire, Brian Monaghan and attended by community members, local business owners, Council staff, and Councillors, celebrating the achievement together. Mayor Monaghan also extended special thanks to Micson Constructions, the local team who built the shelter, for their expertise and commitment to the project.

A highlight of the facility is the series of panels featuring artwork by students from schools across the Bland Shire. These colourful contributions brighten the front of the shelter and provide young people with the opportunity to leave a creative and lasting mark. The panels were made possible thanks to the generosity of local businesses who proudly sponsored this element of the project.

Mayor Monaghan said the opening of the shelter is a proud moment for the community:

"This animal shelter is a great achievement for our community. Thanks to the support of the federal government, local schools, businesses, community members, the team at Micson Constructions and our Bland Shire staff, we now have a welcoming, modern space that will make a real difference for animals in the Bland Shire. It has been a real team effort"

The new Bland Shire Animal Shelter will now serve as a dedicated community asset, ensuring safe, high-quality care for animals and offering a more compassionate and sustainable approach to animal management across the Shire. Looking ahead, the facility will also provide greater opportunities for rehoming and adoption programs, community education, and stronger partnerships with local animal welfare groups, helping to create positive outcomes for both animals and the people of Bland Shire.
