Meet local resident Phoebe, a proud Ambassador for Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria's tennis program.

Blind Tennis has been a gamechanger for Port Phillip resident Phoebe.

Phoebe, who was feeling isolated after experiencing progressive vision loss from macular degeneration, is now a proud Ambassador for Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria's (BSRV's) tennis program.

People with varying levels of vision impairment progress from drills and learning how to play socially to playing competitive matches, using an audible sponge ball which is either black or fluorescent yellow.

Before taking to the court, Phoebe, who has blurred vision, reduced central vision and difficulty seeing facial features, lacked confidence. "I started to become nervous about not seeing stairs or steps, for example, so I just didn't go out anymore."

At the end of last year, everything changed when she heard about BSRV's tennis program held on Friday nights at Melbourne Park Tennis Centre. Encouraged by BSRV CEO Maurice Gleeson to come along and give it a go, her mindset transformed from 'I can't' to 'I can, I will.'

"I now believe in myself. I want to develop my skills, not just in Blind Tennis, but across all facets of my life," Phoebe said.

"It's not just about playing tennis, it's also about the social interaction. For the first time in my life, I've found other people who have experienced vision loss. We are now starting to meet for coffee. For me, it's not just sport, it's friendship."

As well as the social program, there are opportunities for Blind Tennis participants to train and take part in state, national and international competitions.

Since 1977, BSRV has been passionate about encouraging and supporting everyone who is vision impaired or blind to lead healthy, active lives. Blind Tennis is one of many sport and recreation programs on offer. Group walks, a volunteer walking buddy program and online fitness programs are just some of the range of activities available. Ambassadors are also available to speak at events and schools.
