Blue Mountains to host 7th Australian Bushfire Building Conference

Many of the nation's top bushfire experts will meet in the Blue Mountains later this year to share their knowledge and experience of how to protect communities from the threat of bushfires.

Now in its seventh year, the Australian Bushfire Building Conference is the only event of its kind for professionals involved in the planning, designing, building, landscaping, consulting, regulating, and certifying of buildings in bushfire-prone areas.

The three day event will run from August 25 - 27 at the Fairmont Resort in Leura with the theme for this year's conference being "Addressing the Tensions: Are we getting the balance right?"

Topics for discussion include:

  • lessons learnt from the 2020/21 bushfire season
  • bushfire behaviour and landscaping
  • planning controls
  • bushfire building regulations
  • bushfire design and construction
  • resilience
  • recovery and,
  • innovation

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: "As a community with extensive, lived experienced of the threat and long-term impacts of bushfires, the Blue Mountains are perfectly positioned to host this conference. This event will be an incredible opportunity for some of the Australia's best minds to come together to help us all build resilience in the face of extreme weather events".

For those that are unable to attend in-person, all sessions of the conference will be live streamed across a dedicated digital platform.

This event is brought to you by Blue Mountains City Council, Blue Mountains Economic Enterprise and Major Partner, the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Councillor Mick Fell, recently appointed to the Chair of the Blue Mountains Planetary Health Advisory Committee, said: "I welcome this event. How we manage bushfires and build resilience is a critical element of planetary health going forward."
