Body corporates urged to dive into Water Smart Package

Townsville City Council is encouraging body corporates to dive in to the $10 million Water Smart Package.

More than 2700 homeowners, renters and body corporates have registered their interest in the Water Smart Package already.

Mayor Jenny Hill said body corporates will get up to $1000 back after purchasing products to help save water.

"Medium to high density unit properties can tap into rebates of up to $1000 through the Water Smart Package," Cr Hill said.

"They can access the Package if they buy water saving devices such as pool covers, drip irrigation and smart irrigation controllers.

"They can also apply for a rebate if they plant water-efficient turf or install rainwater tanks."

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart emphasised the importance of the Water Smart Package which will undoubtedly help to ensure future water security for Townsville.

"By utilising the Queensland Government funded Water Smart Package it's clear that Townsville households and body corporates can save money, save water and invest in ongoing water security for Townsville and its community," Mr Stewart said.

"I encourage any individual or body corporate eligible to be involved to take up this fantastic opportunity."

Cr Hill said body corporates still have time to get involved.

"Almost 90 per cent of the registrations we have received have come from home owners, but we're keen to hear from more body corporates," Cr Hill said.

"Many apartment complexes have large gardens and pools where significant amounts of water can be saved.

"Registrations of Interest are open until the end of March, but it's important to remind body corporates that once the program is activated they'll need to register for the Package online before they go and buy the product.

"The Registration of Interest process we are running now doesn't guarantee people access to the Package."

The Water Smart Package is funded from the Queensland Government's $225 million investment in water security in Townsville.
