Body found in burnt-out vehicle - Smithfield

An investigation is underway after the discovery of a man's body in a burnt-out vehicle in Sydney's south-west overnight.

About 6.00pm (Saturday 30 January 2021), emergency services were called to the Hume Road, Smithfield, after reports of a vehicle fire.

Fire & Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the blaze and police discovered the body of a man inside.

The man, believed to be aged in his 20s, is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene was established, which is being examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives from Cumberland Police Area Command, assisted by the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, have established Strike Force Bettington to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death, which is being treated as suspicious.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
