Body of missing fisherman found at Port Kembla

The body of a man missing in waters off Port Kembla has been found.

About 6pm yesterday (Thursday 16 April 2020), a boat carrying two men, aged 68 and 32, was returning to the Port Kembla boat ramp, when it encountered hazardous conditions and capsized near Rocky Island.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District – with assistance from the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, the Marine Area Command, a NSW Ambulance helicopter and SES – commenced a search for the two fishermen.

About 7.30pm, the 32-year-old man was found in the water before he was airlifted to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition.

Due to conditions, the search had to be suspended for the second man at 10.30pm yesterday. The search resumed near Rocky Island at 7am today (Friday 17 April 2020).

About 10am today, the body of the 68-year-old man was found in the water.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
