Boost for regional showgrounds

MidCoast Council

Together with local community groups, MidCoast Council has completed upgrades to showgrounds at Nabiac, Wingham and Bulahdelah.

Nabiac Showground's main entrance has been upgraded, improving pedestrian and access for people living with a disability.

"The Showground entrance is now fit for purpose, and able to support the Nabiac annual show and other major events along with the local markets," said Council's Executive Manager Community Spaces, Dan Aldridge.

Work included demolishing the old ticket box and providing a new, purpose built ticketing booth.

A new dual traffic concrete driveway with a dedicated pedestrian access, new gates and culvert drainage has been installed, along with internal concrete pathways to support markets and other events.

The works were made possible thanks to funding from the Australian Government Community Grants of $78,990, an in-kind contribution of $26,330 from Wallamba Show Society and MidCoast Council providing the balance.

Works are almost complete at Wingham's showground after extensive refurbishments which include a new cattle pavilion undercover area and a rebuilt spinners and craft shed, funded by the NSW Stronger Country Communities fund and project managed by MidCoast Council in consultation with the Wingham Showground Crown Lands Manager.

And Bulahdelah's Showground now has fully refurbished amenities with two new accessible bathrooms, including shower, toilet and hand washing facilities, and a privacy wall at each entrance point.

The change rooms have also been completely updated, with new shower and toilet fixtures and new change room seating made from recycled materials.

The exterior of the building has been modernised with a rendered finish around the entire building and the roof updated to a skillion roof.

"We have also added footpaths to the perimeter of the building and a concrete apron at the entrance for easier access especially during wet weather," said Dan Aldridge.

The amenities upgrade was funded by a Crown Reserves Improvement Fund Program of $150,000 and a Council contribution of $135,000.
