Boosting Literacy, Numeracy in Tasmanian Schools

An additional $16.7 million will be delivered in the 2026-27 Budget to deliver the Tasmanian Government's commitment to lift literacy and numeracy outcomes.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the Budget delivers on the Government's commitment to a strong economy and caring community, while continuing to invest in the services Tasmanians need now and into the future.

"This Budget ensures our economy continues to be strong, resilient and well positioned for the future," Minister Palmer said.

"That's why 100 per cent of Tasmanian Government primary schools are teaching literacy in an explicit and structured way for at least one hour each day.

"Our Lifting Literacy approach is measured and intentional, so the impact is long lasting and sustainable.

"Schools are being supported at every stage of implementation with advice, guidance and information tailored to their context and need.

"We know that this approach is working and that's why we are committed to doing the same for numeracy."

Minister Palmer said the new Strengthening Numeracy initiative is designed to improve Tasmanian numeracy outcomes in the early years, across the school years and into adulthood, with the implementation plan outlining critical actions to be undertaken.

"As part of the plan, we are introducing an approach to teaching mathematics that is systematic, explicit and evidenced based.

"This mirrors our successful Lifting Literacy initiative, which is in its third year of implementation.

"Our numeracy approach will focus on building workforce knowledge and capability, providing Instructional Materials and guidance for teachers, and having a consistent approach to screening and assessment.

"Work is underway with Ochre Education, teachers and school staff to develop practical, high quality mathematics resources that give teachers the materials they need to teach the mathematics curriculum.

"Norwood Primary School is among the 32 schools that have begun implementing the resources this year.

"Literacy and numeracy are vital skills for life, and we are committed to ensuring that our children and young people have the knowledge they need to succeed.

"This Budget is continuing to support improved literacy and numeracy outcomes for all Tasmanians."
