Calling all women in Hobsons Bay to break down the barriers and get active!

Hobsons Bay City Council has teamed up with other Councils and organisations in Melbourne’s West to increase women and girls’ participation in sport and active recreation across the region.

Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham City Councils, Women’s Health West and the Victorian Government, have finalised the Women’s Participation in Sport and Active Recreation in Melbourne’s West: An Action Plan for Change 2020-25 study which aims to improve women and girl’s participation in sport and create more gender equitable opportunities and environments in Melbourne’s West.

The plan identifies 48 actions that Hobsons Bay and other participating Councils will focus on to help change access, participation and the experience of sport and active recreation for women and girls.

Hobsons Bay residents and sporting groups are invited to the virtual launch this Friday 18 September, 10am to 11.30am.

The online event will include a keynote address from national road cycling and rowing champion Dr Bridie O’Donnell. Bridie is also a physician and the inaugural Director of the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation.

The project has been supported by a $45,000 contribution from the State Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and is led by Wyndham City Council.

Later in the year, Hobsons Bay City Council will launch the VicHealth This Girl Gan campaign which aims to encourage more women to get fit and active.

Council’s social media channels will promote a series of free activities which can be done within the state government’s COVID-19 restrictions and are tailored to women and girls who want to get active but aren’t sure about how to take the first step.
