Botany Aquatic Centre Demolition Begins: Bayside

Progress is underway with the Botany Aquatic Centre Redevelopment project, with a sod-turning ceremony held on Tuesday 22 July to celebrate the beginning of the demolition stage.

Bayside Mayor Councillor Edward McDougall, Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton, Ford Civil Chief Executive Officer Alan Gordon, Councillor Ron Bezic, Councillor Christina Curry and Councillor Scott Morrisey attended the ceremony to mark the first step in the redevelopment project.

Bayside Council and Sydney Airport formed a multi-million-dollar local partnership in 2018, setting up the Community and Environment Projects Reserve Fund to fund a variety of community and environmentally focused projects over the next 10 years.

The Botany Aquatic Centre upgrade is the first major project to be funded by this partnership, with $5 million dollars being designated to contribute to the water slides and the splash pad at the new facility.

The demolition tender was awarded in June and works on the demolition will begin by the end of July.

The planned redevelopment includes new state-of-the-art facilities, adventure waterplay and slides, a 50-metre outdoor competition pool, an indoor learn to swim pool, a 25-metre indoor lap pool, a new grandstand, gym space, and landscaping.

The new Botany Aquatic Centre is expected to open for the summer 2027/28 season.

Bayside Mayor Edward McDougall said

"I am excited to be able to celebrate the first step in bringing a fantastic facility to our community.

"I'd like to thank Sydney Airport for their generous financial contribution, which has enabled us to provide an exciting adventure waterplay for the community to enjoy," Bayside Mayor Edward McDougall said.

"This is a very exciting day and a big win for our community and I look forward to the pool opening in the summer of 2027/28."

Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said

"Sydney Airport has been part of this community for more than a century and we're proud to support this major project in partnership with Bayside Council.

"Botany Aquatic Centre is a special place for many in the Bayside community and Sydney Airport is delighted to be involved in bringing it into a new era. The upgraded facilities, including the new splash pad, will give families and future generations a fantastic space to connect, stay active, and cool off.

"We're committed to supporting the communities that surround us and are excited to keep building on this momentum with Bayside Council through the Community and Environment Projects Reserve Fund."
