Bould-er Safety Treatment For Currajong Park

Works to make Currajong Park a safer place for visitors are underway with boulders being installed around the recreational space.

Currajong Park is used frequently by residents walking their dogs, playing with children and training for futsal, but it has also been targeted repeatedly by hoons in stolen vehicles.

Divisional councillor Andrew Robinson said the $275,000 project would include boulder installation and the addition of deflection bars at pathways and maintenance access gates.

"Currajong Park is a valuable recreational space for residents, but unfortunately a small handful of vandals have gone out of their way to damage the park and create an unsafe environment for families," Cr Robinson said.

"The park has been targeted several times this year, causing costly damage. While crime prevention falls under the State Government's purview, Council is committed to doing what it can to keep our residents and assets as safe as possible.

"Council's boulder protection program has been very successful across other parks in Townsville and I'm glad we are able to add the same safety measures to Currajong Park."

Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said the boulder program was part of Council's continued commitment to investing into community safety.

"In our latest budget, Council invested $18.1 million into community safety and wellbeing initiatives to give our residents safe places to enjoy across the city," Cr Greaney said.

"Part of this investment includes our successful boulder protection program, which has been rolled out at a number of other vandalised parks across Townsville since 2022.

"It's our hope that with the addition of boulders at Currajong Park we will be able to make the park a safer space for residents and reduce the amount of money spent repairing the park after repeated hooning and vandalism."

Works at Currajong Park are expected to be complete in the coming weeks.
