- Brest is one of the first French cities to implement the multimodal system, which allows passengers to use their payment card when connecting between different modes of public transport, at no additional cost.

- This new service will also propose multi-validation: allowing people to travel in groups of up to 6 passengers using a single payment card.

- This solution is compatible with all banks and contactless payment cards affiliated to MASTERCARD and VISA.

- This new function will facilitate access to the Bibus public transport network, help improve the service for users and punctuality, and support the national energy transition process.

From September 16, users of the Bibus public transport network in Brest Métropole will be able to pay for their trips on buses, trams and cable cars (Multimodal function) using their contactless payment card, regardless of what bank they are with. The contactless payment card now serves as the ticket.

With the increasing popularity of contactless payment in France, the challenges for this new service specifically include improving speed and punctuality at stops across the Bibus public transport network. As a result, because of the reduction in sales made by drivers, ticket printing and handling of change, the waiting time at each stop is reduced, allowing more time for travelling.

"Today, our research on the ground has demonstrated that it takes one second to pay by card compared to fifteen seconds to pay the driver," says Laurent Bréchon-Cornery, Smart Mobility Director at Mastercard.

This solution offers simple, secure and user-friendly travel:

Users no longer need loose change, they simply get on board and present their contactless payment card at the validation terminal like any other ticket. Once payment has been accepted, the validation terminal will not issue a ticket. The payment card serves as a ticket and allows you to use the entire network for 60 minutes. The price paid will be the same as that for a paper ticket, i.e. ….

If travelling in a group, the user selects the number of tickets to be issued on the validation terminal and presents their payment card only once to pay.

If getting a connecting service, each time the user boards a mode of transport, regardless of the type, they simply present the same payment card at the validation terminal.

During an inspection, users just need to present their contactless payment card to the ticket inspector on their control terminal, to prove they have paid to travel.

Users can consult their history and obtain a statement of their trips and payments, simply and securely, by going to the transportation network website: https://www.bibus.fr/ rubriques Titres et tarifs, Paiement sans contact ;

The use of contactless payment supports other public health measures.

The service will be adapted in line with users' feedback so that new functionalities can be added and its ergonomics improved.

Brest Metropole

"Being able to pay for a ticket by payment card was a real expectation of users in Brest metropolitan area. We are pleased to give them this new possibility. What's more, as the control is done on the bank card itself, there is no need for paper: we are allowing our users to adopt a virtuous behaviour for more sustainable mobility. " Yohann Nedelec - Vice-President of Brest Metropole in charge of transport.

Bibus

Making the use of public transport more convenient and simpler is an important factor in developing sustainable mobility in Brest Metropole".

Paul Gardey de Soos - Managing Director of Bibus.
