Hume City Council is showing support for our everyday local heroes by lighting up the cube at Town Hall Broadmeadows for National Volunteer Week, 19 – 25 May.

Hume City Mayor, Councillor Jarrod Bell, met with councillor colleagues and community volunteer groups at the lighting to capture the sight and give thanks for their incredible work.

Every year, National Volunteer Week is held to recognise the power of volunteering, and the positive impact it has on communities.

This year's National Volunteer Week theme is 'Connecting Communities', focusing on the connections created through volunteer work which lead to inclusive and healthy communities.

Joining Cr Bell at Town Hall were volunteers from the TAC L2P Program and our local State Emergency Services (SES) branches, who are both celebrating landmark events this week.

The TAC L2P Program, which gives learner drivers who don't have access to a supervising driver or vehicle experience on the road, an opportunity to learn to drive with registered volunteers. The program is celebrating an amazing one million drive hours given.

And the SES is celebrating its 50th year of volunteering this month, a cause that Cr Bell has been involved with for many years.

"All forms of volunteering are close to my heart. I am a decades long Scouts member, and I've been volunteering in emergency services since I was a teenager," Cr Bell says.

"Giving back to the community is personally rewarding in so many ways. Knowing you've helped another person is a feeling unmatched by other activities, and on top of that you're making connections with the people in your community you would otherwise walk straight past in the street.

"Volunteering gives you an opportunity to help your friends and neighbours, and a community is much stronger when people know they can count on those around them."

Councils in Victoria have been invited to light up key landmarks, buildings, or monuments in red this week as a visible tribute to the tireless efforts of volunteers who enrich our communities.
