Budget Investment In Community Pharmacy Welcomed

The Tasmanian Branch of the Pharmacy Guild has welcomed the investment in community pharmacy outlined in today's Budget.

Branch President Joe O'Malley congratulated the government on supporting Tasmanian community pharmacies to deliver more care for patients.

"The Tasmanian Government's investment in expanding community pharmacists' scope of practice is going to be a gamechanger for access to healthcare", said Mr O'Malley.

"Right now we have got dozens of Tasmanian community pharmacists embarking on training so they can treat more health conditions in more places around the state.

"We have seen patients in other states beginning to benefit from these safe reforms that improve patient access to care, and it is exciting for Tasmania to be part of it."

The 2026-27 Tasmanian Budget provides $1 million for expanded scope of practice training and $1 million for grants to support increased opening hours for community pharmacies that have applied.

Following appropriate training, community pharmacists will be able to treat a range of acute and chronic health conditions, like asthma, ear infections, shingles, and many others.

Mr O'Malley noted that these new conditions would be in addition to other recent scope of practice expansions, including trained pharmacists being authorised to treat uncomplicated UTIs and to initiate hormonal contraception.

"Community pharmacists in Tasmania provide accessible healthcare to thousands of patients every day, and these investments will help us to deliver even more" he concluded.
