Building a strong economy and creating more jobs

Guy Barnett,Minister for Energy

The Tasmanian Liberal Government's number one priority is to create jobs and grow the economy. We have a plan to achieve this and it's clear that plan is working.

One of Tasmania's largest economic opportunities for the next decade is renewable energy – our Battery of the Nation pumped hydro plans, new wind farm projects and the second interconnector will create thousands of jobs and billions in investment in Tasmania over the coming years.

We have worked closely with the Commonwealth Government to progress these plans and we welcome their commitment today to invest $17 million to provide fee-free training in priority skills for Tasmania.

Tasmania needs a skilled workforce equipped with the expertise to build and maintain pumped hydro as part of the Battery of the Nation project, and electrical skills to build interconnection infrastructure within the National Electricity Market.

These projects will create jobs in design, engineering, project management, civil construction, electrical and mechanical trade skills, transport, as well as ongoing operations and maintenance.

The Tasmanian Government will continue to progress opportunities for our business and industry to create jobs, whether it's in renewable energy, tourism, agriculture and aquaculture, mining and forestry or any of our job-creating industries.
