Building approvals through roof

The ABS figures released today for July 2019 confirms Tasmania's housing sector remains the strongest in the nation, with more to come.

In the year to July 2019 there were 3137 dwellings approved in Tasmania, an increase of 5.8 per cent compared to the previous year. In fact, Tasmania was the only jurisdiction in Australia to see approvals growth over this period.

In the past five years, Tasmania's housing sector has gone from strength to strength: with a significant average of 91 more dwellings approved per month than in the last year of the Labor-Green Government.

This reinforces building activity data released earlier this week highlighting Tasmania was the only jurisdiction in Australia to see activity growth over the year to July 2019 in trend terms, with all other jurisdictions seeing a decrease in building work done.

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government has extended the $20,000 First Home Builder Boost, provided stamp duty relief for pensioners who are downsizing their property, removed red tape to make it easier and quicker to build homes, and rezoned surplus government owned land to enable more homes to be built.

While we know there is more to do, the data points to increasing housing supply and a strong building and construction sector in Tasmania.
