The Miles Government has launched a new online Cultural Capability tool with practical advice for businesses on cultural awareness and training for building a supportive environment for First Nations workers and operators.

The online tool helps to increase businesses' awareness of the needs of First Nations staff and developing positive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and customers.

Employment and Small Business and Training and Skills Minister Lance McCallum said:

"The Cultural Capability tool, backed by the Miles Government, is designed to simplify workplace cultural awareness, skills training and recruitment with an easy-to-follow checklist.

"More Queenslanders are in jobs than ever before and we know when employers are supported to build culturally diverse, innovative and inclusive workplaces, businesses thrive.

"Queensland's booming economy is home to more than a quarter of the Australia's First Nations businesses.

"Through the Cultural Capability tool, we're empowering more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders to maximise training opportunities to set up their own businesses and create good local jobs."

Fast facts:

The Cultural Capability Resource is a key action under Paving the Way – the First Nations Training Strategy, which supports national Closing the Gap targets by improving education, training and employment outcomes.

Paving the Way's 11 actions being implemented include First Nations-led training and workforce solutions, skills and training pathway opportunities, and cultural awareness skills and competency.
