Bushfire Safety Warning Ahead Of Finke Weekend

NT Government

With the Finke Desert Race, one of the biggest camping weekends of the year in Central Australia on this weekend, Bushfires NT are reminding campers to remain vigilant with campfire safety.

"The rains in Central Australia have resulted in a lot of grass this year and even in areas previously burnt we are seeing significant regrowth," Bushfires NT Chief Fire Control Officer Tony Fuller said. "In simple terms more grass, equals more fuel and an increased fire risk, fortunately the weather is not extreme, but the fuel load risk remains.

"To avoid any potential bushfires or campground losses, we would like to remind attendees to remain vigilant with campfires across the weekend to protect themselves and other race goers."

He said that while campfires are an important part of camping in the cold conditions along the Finke track, there are some important rules to follow.

"Do not put hazardous materials on a campfire, ensure all fires are supervised by a responsible adult and do not leave fires unattended," Mr Fuller said.

"Remember to clear a wide area, four meters is the preferred distance, of all bush and flammable material around any campfire, and most importantly, extinguish all campfires no longer in use.

Following these simple rules will help to ensure everyone has a great weekend and remains safe along the track."
