Buying Local Seafood Helps Create Territory Jobs

Territorians areencouraged to think local this Easter and enjoy delicious, fresh,locally-caught seafood from local fish markets, supermarkets, restaurants andcafes.

The Territory Labor Government and NT Seafood Council arecombining to promote the SupportNT Caught message, with many restaurants and cafes using the slogan as aselling point on menus.

Easter is one of the mostpopular times to purchase seafood, and Territorians are known for their love oflocal seafood.

NT seafood labelling lawsare unique in Australia, allowing customers in restaurants and cafes to make aninformed decision to buy a local or imported seafood meal.

Available data showsfisheries contributed 19.4 per cent of the total value of Territory ruralindustries and fisheries production value.

The total value of fishingproduction has increased by 13.3 per cent to $140.8 million, up from $124.3million the previous year. This increase is mainly attributed to the rises inNorthern Prawn Fleet (NT catch only), the NT wild catch (fish), and aquacultureand NT crustaceans.

The Territoryshigh-quality fresh and tasty seafood products are due to the Territoryswell-managed fisheries, evident with the popularity of the local products.

As noted by Minister for Primary Industry and Resources, Paul Kirby:

The Territory has some ofthe most sustainable and well-managed fisheries in the world, and we arerenowned for the quality of our seafood, caught in pristine local waters.

Buying fresh localseafood supports local, Territory jobs.

Commercial fishingensures there is fresh seafood available for Territorians and is also animportant part of our local economy, supporting small businesses and jobs.

In the lead up to the Easter long weekend it iscertainly hectic for the seafood industry and fishers and retailers work hard to ensure local seafood canbe enjoyed by everyone.

We arespoilt for choice here in the Territory when it comes to the selection oflocally-caught quality produce and it is comforting that so many Territoriansprefer NT seafood and actively ask to go local.
