The drainage upgrade is progressing in Byron Bay's town centre with most of the drainage work in the rail corridor and South Lawson Street Car Park now complete.

Although the intersection at Jonson Street and Byron Street is closed to through traffic, while the major drainage upgrade is underway, shops are open, and everyone is encouraged to support local businesses.

"Please don't be discouraged by the construction site in Byron's town centre. All the businesses remain open and are ready as always to welcome you. Whether you want a tasty treat, a unique gift, or just want to pick up supplies, we really encourage you to get down to Jonson Street and Byron Street at this time," said Byron Shire Mayor Sarah Ndiaye.

"Whether you're a local or a visitor taking advantage of the quieter time to visit, there's something for everyone in Byron's town centre," she said.

"June and July are a great time to visit the Byron Shire. At this time of the year we see the whales on their annual migration, you get some beautiful cold crisp mornings and evenings, and there's lots to see and do," she added.

Work on the Byron Bay Drainage Upgrade will continue in the Jonson Street and Byron Street intersection until the end of June, before Jonson Street is reopened to traffic. Footpath work on part of Jonson Street will continue in July.

From July the drainage upgrade will also continue along Byron Street towards Fletcher Street, with stage one of town centre works due to be completed by the end of this year.
