Caloundra Regional Gallery appoints new curator

A new era for Caloundra Regional Gallery will begin on September 2, when Jo Duke, current curator and manager of the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum, will take over the direction of the Sunshine Coast's regional gallery.

Ms Duke has more than 25 years' experience in curatorial, programming and management roles in leading institutions including the Queensland Art Gallery, National Museum of Australia and Griffith University Art Museum.

Current curator, Hamish Sawyer, is returning to Brisbane for family reasons and to pursue further study and other opportunities.

Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said Ms Duke had across the board experience in collections management, program development, research, publications and Indigenous art. That's an excellent skill set to bring to our region.

"The work Hamish has done to elevate the profile of the gallery through an outstanding, and on occasion more edgy, exhibition program over the past three years is testament to his drive and knowledge of the sector, and I know we all wish him every success in his future endeavours," Cr Baberowski said.

"I look forward to welcoming Jo and seeing her vision develop for the gallery as she gets to know our region and exciting aspirations for the visual arts in the coming years.

"It's certainly an exciting time to be a part of the arts on the Sunshine Coast and I'm sure Jo will relish the opportunities and challenges ahead."

Jo said Caloundra held a special place in her heart, having wonderful memories of visiting her Grandmother who lived there.

"I'm very excited to be coming to Caloundra and feel privileged to be taking over the manager and curator role at Caloundra Regional Gallery," Jo said.

"I'm really looking forward to working with the gallery team and being a part of Sunshine Coast Council and the vibrant arts scene in the region.

"I hope to continue to explore, enhance and expose the unique culture and character of the Sunshine Coast as well as ensure that the region is part of the national dialogue on arts and culture in Australia."

Owned and operated by Sunshine Coast Council, Caloundra Regional Gallery is located at 22 Omrah Avenue and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am - 4pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am - 2pm.
