The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Jim Carr, Minister of International Trade Diversification, and the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of International Development and Minister for Women and Gender Equality, today issued the following statement:
"Canada strongly condemns the November 6 attack against a convoy of workers of the Canadian mining company SEMAFO and the security forces protecting them.
"We offer sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, and wish those injured a speedy recovery. There are no reports of any Canadian citizens being affected.
"Canada and Burkina Faso have a longstanding relationship, based on strong people-to-people ties, commercial partnership and cooperation on the world stage. Canada has a long history of supporting education, health, gender equality and human rights in Burkina Faso.
"Canada remains concerned about the deteriorating security situation in Burkina Faso and deplores the violent attacks carried out on civilians. We will continue to work with Burkina Faso and partners in the region to prevent conflict and fight terrorism.
"Canada stands in solidarity with the Burkinabè people."
