Canada Eyes Expansion of Journalism Tax Credit

Department of Finance Canada

The government recognises the importance of journalism in our communities, and is committed to supporting fact-based, local journalism that benefits all Canadians. The important work of journalists, including broadcast journalism, is crucial in our democratic system, ensuring accountability and a well-informed public, particularly during a period of global uncertainty.

As announced in the Spring Economic Update 2026, the government is proposing to extend the Canadian Journalism Labour Tax Credit to audio and audiovisual news production. The government intends to move forward with this extension and is seeking input on its design to ensure it is effective, targeted, and reflective of the realities of the news sector.

Starting today, stakeholders and interested Canadians are invited to take part in public consultations
