Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy

Employment and Social Development Canada

The Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy aims to support a trades workforce that is skilled, inclusive, certified and productive. The Strategy aims to:

  • promote the skilled trades as a good career option;
  • develop initiatives that help Canadians explore, prepare for, participate in and succeed in apprenticeships;
  • facilitate the participation of employers and unions in apprenticeships; and
  • encourage innovative tools and approaches to better prepare pre-apprentices, apprentices and journeypersons for the jobs of tomorrow.

The Sustainable Jobs stream of the Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP SJS), under the Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy is designed for projects that will develop and deliver green training for apprentices and journeypersons in Red Seal trades that are key to reducing Canada's emissions.

In Quebec, apprenticeship training is provided through the public school system with no union involvement. As part of this funding, an amendment to the current agreement, to invest $24.7 million over 5 years, with the Government of Quebec supports the Province in developing and delivering green training in 18 Red Seal trades that are key to reducing Canada's emissions, while accounting for the unique features of Quebec's apprenticeship system. This amendment is expected to benefit up to 3,750 apprentices and journeypersons over five years in Quebec. The activities funded in Quebec will align with those delivered elsewhere in Canada.

The UTIP SJS call for proposals closed on September 5, 2024.
