The ACT Government this week marks Harmony Week — a national observance that highlights Australia's cultural diversity and the significant contributions people from all cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds make to our community. Harmony Week is a time to reflect on the values of respect, belonging and understanding, which continue to shape a more connected and cohesive Canberra.
While Harmony Week prompts us to acknowledge the challenges faced by multicultural communities — including racism, discrimination and exclusion — it also recognises the strength that diversity brings to the ACT. Marking this week publicly reinforces our commitment to inclusion and reminds us why embracing diversity enriches our social, cultural and civic life.
Across the ACT, community organisations, schools, faith groups and cultural associations will host events throughout the week. These activities bring Canberrans together, deepen cross‑cultural understanding and affirm our ongoing commitment to building a welcoming and inclusive city.
Minister for Multicultural Affairs Michael Pettersson said Harmony Week was an important reminder of the role we all play in nurturing inclusion.
"We should all take this opportunity to reflect on the kind of community we want to be — one that celebrates diversity, confronts prejudice, and stands up for respect wherever and whenever discrimination arises."
The ACT continues to lead nationally in strengthening multicultural inclusion, supported by reforms introduced through the Multiculturalism Act 2023. Guided by the 2024–25 work plan of the Ministerial Advisory Council for Multiculturalism (MACM), the Government is enhancing community engagement, promoting culturally safe services, and embedding the Charter for Multiculturalism across the Territory.
At the community level, the ACT Government's Multicultural Inclusion Grants are supporting projects that celebrate culture, foster social connection, and encourage intercultural and interfaith engagement — including many aligned with Harmony Week. These initiatives help strengthen inclusion, increase access to culturally appropriate services and support the resilience of Canberra's multicultural communities.
The ACT's commitment to nurturing a harmonious, inclusive and united community is enshrined in the Charter for Multiculturalism, which affirms that every person deserves to feel respected, valued and welcomed, regardless of background or belief.
"I am proud that here in the ACT we have introduced a positive duty for organisations to eliminate discrimination, sexual harassment and unlawful vilification," Minister Pettersson said.
"This is a crucial step toward ensuring everyone in our community has equal opportunities to participate in and contribute to the life of our city."
This week also includes two important international observances that reinforce the values of Harmony Week.
- The International Day to Combat Islamophobia (15 March), which calls on governments and communities around the world to stand against anti‑Muslim discrimination and to support safe, respectful and inclusive environments for Muslim communities.
- The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21 March), which highlights the ongoing need to challenge racism in all its forms and promote equality everywhere.
Both days serve as reminders that building an inclusive Canberra requires continuous action, solidarity and a commitment to justice for all.
