Cardboard trial starting at select apartments units and townhouses

We are trialling a dedicated cardboard collection service at a select number of apartments, units and townhouses across Yarra.

This trial will help us determine whether a separate cardboard collection will improve the way we manage cardboard recycling.

The trial is based on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our purchasing habits. The increase of online purchases has resulted in an increase of cardboard that each household needs to dispose of.

We recognise this shift in consumer behaviour has greatly affected apartment buildings with shared bins.

If successful and suitable, this trial will also provide us with helpful information on how best to implement this service across all apartments in Yarra.

The sites participating in the trial were identified during an expression of interest process in March 2021. We selected 50 sites which included a diverse mix of building types and locations.

We started collecting the cardboard bins from Monday 28 June. The cardboard bins are collected fortnightly, on alternate weeks to the yellow-lidded recycling bin.

Cardboard and paper are still accepted in the yellow-lidded recycling bin if the cardboard bin is full. Yellow-lidded recycling bins are collected as per the normal recycling collection schedule.

Our Waste Services team will be providing educational resources and details on the trial to contacts at all sites via email.
