Vietnamese-Canadian, Montreal-based filmmaker Carol Nguyen's feature documentary debut, Still Night, Burning House, will have its Quebec premiere in the national competition at the Festival du nouveau cinéma (FNC). The filmmaker will be in attendance for a post-screening discussion with the audience. The FNC takes place in Montreal from October 8 to 18.
In this Metafilms, National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and Portage Films co-production, the director's Toronto family travels to Vietnam, where they face long-unspoken questions about an uncle's mysterious death.
The filmmaker's most personal work to date, Still Night, Burning House is the follow-up and companion to her award-winning 2019 short No Crying at the Dinner Table, which was named to Canada's Top Ten, an annual list of the country's finest films, compiled by the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
This new documentary has already attracted attention at several major Canadian film festivals, with its world premiere at TIFF and screenings at the Atlantic International Film Festival and the Vancouver International Film Festival, among others.
