Cascade Pier Upgrade Moves Into Design Phase

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

The Albanese Government's $10 million investment to upgrade Norfolk Island's Cascade Pier has entered its next important phase, with design consultants engaging with port users and key stakeholders to progress the improvements to this vital infrastructure.

The upgrades to Cascade Pier will see the raising and extending of the apron to improve freight operations, cyclone resilience and safety for pier users, as well as supporting future freight containerisation for the busy port.

The government is committed to the long-term sustainability and viability of critical freight infrastructure on Norfolk Island, with these upgrades supporting improved structural integrity against cyclones and extreme weather events, following damage caused to the pier during Cyclone Gabrielle in early 2023, as well as supporting safer and more efficient loading and unloading of goods, vessels, and materials.

Consult Marine has been contracted to deliver this phase of the project, and has been engaging with stakeholders to ensure future designs reflect local knowledge and the distinct maritime environment of the island, as well as the operational capacity and requirements of the port.

The upgrades to the pier complement the delivery of two purpose-built Cargo Transfer Vessels, Trumpi and Oefi, which were constructed specifically for Norfolk Island lighterage. This project was funded by the Albanese Government and delivered by Norfolk Island Regional Council. They were designed in close consultation with Norfolk Island's lighterage and stevedoring teams to meet the distinct challenges of freight transfer on island.

The vessels are currently undergoing final testing and commissioning including sea trials and are anticipated to be in operation by the end of November.

The Albanese Government will keep the community updated as the critical Cascade project progresses.

"Cascade Pier is not only critical for Norfolk's sea freight supply, it is an iconic part of the island's coastline and heritage, which is why we have invested $10 million in its future.

"We are now progressing into the detailed design phase, and I am looking forward to seeing this project take shape, informed by those who regularly use the pier and its surrounding waters."

Quotes attributable to the Member for Bean, the Hon David Smith MP:

"These essential upgrades have the potential to reshape how freight is transported to and from the island, and I'm proud we are delivering this targeted investment.

"From fishing boats to supply ships, Cascade Pier is a lifeline for the community, and I'll continue working with port users and stakeholders to ensure Norfolk Island's distinct needs are front and centre of port initiatives."
