Casting Call hits mark

University of the Sunshine Coast students will see their creative Casting Call volunteer recruitment campaign brought to life by Sunshine Coast Council when it is launched next month.

The Casting Call volunteer recruitment campaign is the result of a successful collaboration between council and USC, which saw communication and design students present their creative pitch to senior council officers last year.

The campaign seeks to invite community members to become volunteers for events, festivals, galleries, libraries, museums and heritage organisations on the Sunshine Coast.

Arts and Heritage Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said this is a practical example of our region working together to achieve healthy, smart, creative outcomes.

"It's a win-win. Our university students get to see their work tested in the market place and council gains a go-getting campaign," Cr Baberowski said.

"But the ultimate winner here is the community. Everyone has the opportunity to be part of one of the numerous exciting arts and heritage volunteer programs on the Sunshine Coast.

"Casting Call is such an engaging concept. It transports people from make-believe roles into the real world where they cast themselves as a valued player in the community.

"Not only that, people become the director as well, where they can help shape the role that matches their interests, schedule and skills.

"Whether it's in a museum or taking part in a festival, we have so many exciting volunteer roles on the Sunshine Coast.

"Volunteering is such a great tonic because you get to meet all sorts of new people while exercising your skills. If needed it's also a great addition to a CV, as well as a challenge that simply keeps your brain cells sparking."

Paloma Hodgins, School of Communications and Creative Industries at USC said the creative campaign was a challenging brief for the students.

"They had to come up with a single campaign that included the combined spheres of arts, events and heritage. It had to be a campaign that would highlight the myriad of roles and amazing opportunities," she said.

"Students used the university's Immerse Studio to present their pitch to council. The room features multiple screens which made for a dynamic presentation.

"The pitch was great. It must have been, as council has stayed true to the student's concept, with only minor visual changes."

Students who presented the Casting Call pitch named their project group "Level Up Creative."

Sunshine Coast Council congratulates USC and the students on this successful collaboration.
