Castle Hill Road is set to be closed to vehicles for two weeks from tomorrow as contractors work to stabilise a section of rock wall on the iconic hill.
Acting Mayor and divisional councillor, Ann-Maree Greaney said the Castle Hill works had been moved forward due to stabilisation works at the Stanley Street cutting needing further design due to unforeseen conditions on the rock face.
"Contractors have been hard at work in Stanley Street for a few weeks now, but unfortunately the team have encountered fragmented rocks and have to adjust their approach. Shamrock Civil will move to another section along Castle Hill Road to continue works," Cr Greaney said.
"Unfortunately, steep natural rock walls are never without their engineering challenges, so to make best use of the time delay the contractors will complete another section of stabilisation works in the meantime."
Councillor Greaney said the delay meant the Stanley Street cutting would remain closed for a few weeks longer, and detours would remain in place.
"There is currently a detour in place around the cutting, so we thank both the residents and commuters for their patience," Cr Greaney said.
"The good news is that Castle Hill Road will only be closed to vehicles for the two week period of works and shouldn't interrupt those using the Hill for their daily exercise.
"At this stage the intention is to have Castle Hill Road reopened on the weekends, before works and the road closure resume again on Monday morning. "
Rock wall stabilisation works on Castle Hill are expected to take two weeks to complete, weather and conditions permitting.
The road will be closed to vehicles from Monday to Friday during work hours. Pedestrian and cyclist access will remain unaffected.
Regular work hours are from 7am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.
