Celebrating Queensland's diversity with more multicultural events in 2020

African Festival Townsville, Brisbane's Luminous Lantern Parade, the Burdekin Cultural Fair, the Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival and the Mareeba Multicultural Festival are some of the 165 multicultural celebrations in 2020 that will share in more than $1.3 million through the Palaszczuk Government's Celebrating Multicultural Queensland program.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Stirling Hinchliffe urged all Queenslanders to get along to as many of the events as they could and celebrate the State's cultural diversity.

"I'm delighted that 165 events in 2020 will receive funding through the Celebrating Multicultural Queensland program, that's 13 more celebrations for Queenslanders to enjoy than in 2019," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"There are 21 events receiving funding for the first time including the South Burnett Multi Cultural Festival, Gold Coast Vaisakhi Celebration and Carina Carnivale - A Celebration of Cultures.

"Queensland's diversity is truly one of our greatest strengths and is certainly worth celebrating.

"This is now home to people from 220 countries and territories who speak more than 80 languages and identify with more than 110 faiths.

"These cultural events and festivals help to promote greater cross-cultural awareness, connectedness and community participation in a wonderful way.

"Through food, dance, music and traditions, these events give us a better understanding of who we are, and play an important role in helping to build an inclusive, harmonious and united Queensland.

"It is fantastic to see some events receiving funding through the Celebrating Multicultural Queensland program for the first time, while other events are firmly entrenched on the social calendar of regions, towns and cities right across the State."

Other events include: Townsville Cultural Fest - Celebrating 25 Years, the Gold Coast Multicultural Festival and Mackay's Global Grooves.

A total of 165 events will receive funding ranging from $3,000 to $20,000 in 2020.
