The Acting Executive Director of Bushfires NT, Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security has extended the Central Australian Bushfire Danger Period from 28 February 2023 to 30 April 2023.
The danger area is for the parts of the Territory that lie south of the 19th parallel of south latitude, starting approximately 70kms north of Tennant Creek.
A permit to burn is required before any burning is conducted, and a person must not leave an area before thoroughly extinguishing any fire they have lit. There are substantial penalties for failing to comply with these requirements.
Southern District Officer Stephen Hunter said "The recent weather we have been having in Central Australia has resulted in higher fuel loads and a higher risk of bushfires late in the season.
"Don't be complacent, ensure you and your family are prepared with a survival plan and maintain a well-cut lawn around your home.
"Firebreaks should be free from slashed or dead material and shouldn't have any vegetation more than 50 millimetres high.
