Chair appointment to drive corrections improvements

Ms Christine Nixon has been appointed chair of the new Oversight Committee that will develop a blueprint for change for the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) and Court Transport Unit.

Minister for Corrections Mick Gentleman welcomed the appointment of Ms Nixon to the role as an important step towards improving outcomes for Corrections staff and detainees.

“I’m committed to addressing the issues raised with me by staff and in recent reviews, particularly ensuring our staff are well trained and resourced,” Minister Gentleman said.

“Ms Nixon’s substantial experience in reform over her decorated career means she is well positioned to lead discussions around culture to drive solutions that support staff.

“This appointment means the Oversight Committee will have their first meeting in the coming weeks to address urgent changes and improvements.

“The committee will immediately review current staffing levels and rostering practices while ensuring staff are adequately equipped with the tools and support to perform their roles effectively.”

The Oversight Committee will bring together representatives from the Official Visitors, the Human Rights Commission, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, the CPSU, the AMC, ACT Corrective Services and the Justice and Community Safety Directorate.

“I am looking forward to working closely with the Minister for Corrections and committee members on the development of a blueprint for change to address these important issues”, Ms Nixon said.

“As chair of this Oversight Committee, I will take the lead role to ensure the representatives voices are heard and that support is available as we work towards building a culture of trust.”

Christine Nixon was the first female Chief Commissioner of Police in Australia. Following the Black Saturday bushfires, Ms Nixon led the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority, overseeing the recovery and rebuilding operation.
