Chalmers' Baby Tax Sparks Spending, Inflation Debate

Liberal Party of Australia

"More tax landmines keep emerging from Jim Chalmers' budget, now covering the full circle of life from cradle to grave because the Albanese government can't kick its spending addiction", said Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson.

Mr Wilson's comments come in the wake of reports in The Australian today that Jim Chalmers' Budget contains a birth tax where a child is born and added to a family or small business trust after July 2029.

"The old saying is that there are three guarantees in life - birth, death and taxes - but Jim Chalmers has taken that to mean birth taxes, life taxes, and death taxes", Mr Wilson said.

"Every time the Treasurer tries to 'fix' his broken budget, another tax landmine explodes hitting Australian families, their savings, and small businesses with more financial shrapnel that they didn't vote for".

"Jim Chalmers doesn't understand his Budget, the consequences of it, and he doesn't understand its impact on the economy".

"The Treasurer has already been forced to make several humiliating backdowns on his new taxes. The question is whether the Prime Minister will force him into another humiliating backdown on his Baby Tax".
